Who’s At Fault? Another Injury During a Court Stom

1. Who’s At Fault? Another Injury During a Court Stom

Storming the court when upsetting a top ranked opponent is a tradition as old as sports have existed, but it’s starting to get out of hand. From Caleb Williams to Caitlin Clark and now Duke’s Kyle Filipowski, routinely top players in the country are getting mixed up with surging fans. Despite arguments that Filipowski and Clark may have initiated the contact, in both cases, the players had to be supported off the court. There are very limited protections in place for players: some coaches elect to take their teams off the floor early, some schools create a barrier around the opposing bench to protect them from the mass of fans, and some wave opponents off right along with the students.

Duke’s Head Coach Jon Scheyer made a plea to anyone in a position of influence to help create policies that prevent court storms. Which is a bit ironic from a school with an arena so small fans can reach out and touch players taking the ball out of bounds. Regardless, there is clearly merit to the notion that maybe hundreds of people sprinting on an enclosed space might be unsafe for the athletes.

2. How to Make Baseball Interesting? See Through Pants

Major League Baseball has been working to become more innovative and create a more engaging product for fans. However, transparent uniforms was not, I hope, what they had in mind. Over the past week, the new Fanatics uniforms have been showcased at Spring Training games and in media photos and they’re, quite frankly, awful.

The numbers are printed rather than stitched, the font is tiny and inconsistently spaced, and the pants are completely see-through. Fanatics has invested a ton of resources to gain essentially a monopoly on sports apparel, and decided to cut costs by making some of the worst uniforms we’ve seen since color television was invented. Hopefully this gets fixed before the season because woof it’s bad.

3. Liverpool Secure a Trophy in Klopp’s Final Season

In January, legendary coach of Liverpool FC Jurgen Klopp announced that this would be his last season with the club. His team responded to that news in a major way and are celebrating the first trophy available for English clubs this season, the Carabao Cup. The tournament, open to all teams in the 4 divisions of the English Football League, is one of three major trophies available, along with the English Football Association Cup and the Premier League Title. Liverpool are currently in the 5th round of the FA Cup and holding on to first place of the League. Klopp and the reds are hoping to make his swan song season a truly legendary one.

4. Caitlin Clark Continues to Dominate the News Cycle, This Time in a Loss

Indiana sold out the stadium in search of an upset over Caitlin Clark and Iowa, though some fans pretended they had no idea who she is. When Iowa hoops comes to town, it’s the biggest show in sports, with fans lining down the block to get in. The Hoosiers came with a game plan, harassing Clark with tenacious defense and crowd noise, and despite that she put up 24 points, 10 rebounds, and 9 assists. It wasn’t enough as the #14 Hoosiers won 86-69 over top 5 Iowa. The Indiana crowd taunted, gloated, and showed up for their team, in a night Clark won’t soon forget. Which is unfortunate for Indiana, because she has a decision to make about the WNBA draft and the team with the #1 pick? The Indiana Fever.

5. MLB Spring Training Begins

MLB teams are reporting to camps in Arizona and Florida. All 30 MLB teams have begun to participate in Cactus (Arizona) and Grapefruit (Florida) League games, which started Saturday. Teams are getting up to speed with all eyes on mid-March, when the regular season opens with a two-game series between the Dodgers and Padres in Seoul, South Korea, marking the first MLB games played there, featuring stars like Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts. The 2024 regular season officially begins on March 28, with all 30 teams playing, including six divisional matchups among 15 games.
